We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the images were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
