Meteorologists are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Proceed Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to proceed, following last year's postponement. This comes despite advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," stated the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Open but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be low, meaning warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Commuting is likely to be disrupted.
• The public have been urged to plan for delays for travel on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on trains and buses.

Readings Expected to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Advisories Activated

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this signified the weather could to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is utterly paramount.
