Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
