Zelenskyy commented, "It's evident that Russia is rushing to restart dialogue as soon as it learns of Tomahawks." This statement referred to recent musings about providing advanced missiles to Ukraine.

Political Developments and Global Responses

An ex- American diplomat, Dan Fried, observed, "Putin is trying to disrupt the momentum toward increased sanctions on the Kremlin." Fried continued, "We'll see tomorrow, but the likelihood of moving toward a ceasefire by pressuring Moscow to engage sincerely appear to have decreased."

This development followed Trump had recently been hardening his rhetoric toward Russia until the recent call with the Russian president, which the Russian government characterized as "highly open and constructive."

EU Energy Sanctions and Market Impact

The European Union have established a mandate for energy importers into the European Union to demonstrate their products are not made from Russian crude, as stated in a document published on Thursday. This measure is part of the EU's upcoming prohibition on purchases of fuels made from Russian petroleum, which forms part of its latest sanctions package against Moscow over its military actions in Ukraine.

Market experts noted that trading activity appeared to be factoring in the potential reduction of Indian purchases of Russian oil. Some oil processors in India are getting ready to reduce purchases from Russia, with projections of a gradual decrease, as reported by sources knowledgeable about the situation.

"This is a positive development for the crude oil price as it would eliminate a major buyer of Russian crude," said Tony Sycamore, noting that oil prices were stable on the trading day.

Military Situation and Infrastructure Attacks

A large-scale Russian drone and missile assault hit energy infrastructure in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, causing disruptions in multiple areas. Ukrainian officials stated that Russian forces launched hundreds of unmanned vehicles and many of missiles, along with glide bombs.

"This autumn, the Russian forces use every single day to strike at our energy infrastructure," declared Ukraine's president, adding that strikes impacted the areas of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, central Ukraine, Sumy and western Ukraine.

International Political Responses

Kyiv's representative to Washington, Olga Stefanishyna, asserted that Russia demonstrated its real attitude to peace through the "terror" of such strikes. "Russia yet again opted for weapons over talks, turning this attack into a clear blow to current diplomatic initiatives," Stefanishyna commented.

Meanwhile, the EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced that the European Union had no choice but to strengthen anti-drone defences against Russian threats. Kallas announced a "roadmap" to prepare for potential security challenges by 2030, including a novel anti-drone system to be fully operational by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, dubbed the "EU defensive program," is projected to start operations initially by the 2026 timeline and be completely operational by the end of 2027. EU authorities hopes to obtain the backing of member state representatives at a meeting in the coming days.
