What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
